About Kirk
Kirk has learned many things growing up on a farm. He learned about getting up early and working hard, but he also learned about business.
“I grew up in business…our farm wasn’t a traditional family farm, it was like a ‘business’ farm. They (my parents) bought it, fixed it up and resold it. It was a real estate investment.”
That was Kirk’s first experience with the the real estate business, but not his last. After graduating with a degree in Business Management majoring in Finance, he felt the greatest opportunity that existed at the time was in real estate. His parents, now retired from farming, were realtors. He knew they worked together well on the farm, so it seemed like a natural step to be a realtor with them buying and selling investment properties.
Working side by side with his parents, they have built and restored homes; they have helped people buy and sell their homes. The strong work ethic he learned early in life shows through in his real estate business today. Kirk knew as a child that he was going to help people and be successful. He didn’t dream about being a “superstar” realtor, but rather he knew he would be doing something that would offer significant value to others.
Kirk operates at a high level of commitment as a realtor. He was Rookie of the Year at one of the agencies he worked for, but there’s more to the job than getting listings. Kirk’s goals are providing the best service to his customers. It is important to him to have that one-on-one relationship with his clients as well as keeping in touch. Kirk is very successful because of his high standards in customer service and is willing to do learn more, do more and be more.
Negotiating the real estate transactions and putting deals together are what Kirk enjoys most about being a realtor. He likes finding that ‘win-win’ situation and helping people get what they want. Even though it can be a long process to get to that point, it’s what makes the job rewarding.
As an energetic listing agent, he focuses on representing the seller using the latest technologies. He sees himself as a leader in utilizing the latest methods to effectively do his job. He is ready to change and quick to do so to stay current in the real estate market. Not only does Kirk update his marketing methods, he keeps himself updated by attending coaching programs to be the best person he can be in the business world. He pushes to be ‘in the know’ regarding all things real estate, discussing new trends and concepts with real estate agents all across North America. He wants to know what’s working so he can implement it in his business, and avoid what’s not working.
Kirk feels his best asset is his communication skills, the most important tool of the trade. He knows his customers need help understanding the current real estate market and how they can reach their goals. Listening to his customers is one of his greatest strengths. He also works with them to have realistic expectations. By doing his homework and taking advantage of the technology side of the business, Kirk is researching to see what’s new and available. It definitely gives him the edge in the Oceanside area which is predominately retirement communities. He stands apart from those doing things the traditional way by being innovative in his marketing strategies and online presentations. Connecting with buyers from their location is a key to being successful simply because sixty-percent of the buyers are not from the area. They can’t be reached using the local newspaper.
Although online technology and current information is readily available, there is one lesson that Kirk has learned throughout his career and his life.
“There is no substitute for doing the work. You’ve got to get out there and talk to people…it’s meeting and talking to people…This is a people business.”
Before moving from Alberta to start business on Vancouver Island, Kirk took a year and a half off from the business. During that time he realized how much he liked being in real estate, and that he truly likes helping people. His desire is to take his business to the next level by providing the best customer service like never before.
At the present time, Kirk and his father still work together, just like they did on the farm. Side by side, they make sure their customers are taken care of. Kirk feels that his even-keeled personality gives him stability to being a real estate agent. His down-to-earth attitude makes it easy for him to relate to people. He enjoys getting to know people; he cares about the customer. As much as is he amiable, he is focused and determined – minus the high-pressure. Kirk Walper definitely knows how to get the job done. And just as important as having good customer relations, he also feels that getting to know other agents makes the business of buying and selling real estate that much better. There’s Kirk’s ‘win-win’ attitude again.
On a personal note, Kirk has a wonderful family life involving his wife and two children. They enjoy recreational sports of all kinds. Doing things as a family, like traveling, is important.
Kirk also keeps on track by being a member of the Toastmasters. He regularly practices public speaking which keeps his communication and negotiating skills sharp. About EricHaving been a top producing Realtor since 1999, I've seen a lot of changes in the way that Real Estate is practiced. There is so much more information available to both Buyers and Sellers. People are definitely much better informed than they were in the past and my role as a professional Realtor has evolved in order to reflect that.
I have found that building long term relationships and understanding the needs of each person that I work with is more important than making a sale. I advise my clients with honesty, knowledge, and expertise. Timely and continual communication is an essential part of this, and I make sure that my clients have the information they need to make educated decisions.
